In store at Vivid Black we stock a variety of styles from push-up bras to mastectomy bras. We know that you can’t get away with one style of bra for every outfit – that would just be too easy right?

Sometimes it is easier to talk about what you don’t want in a bra, rather than what you want. Everyone has different sized breasts and different expectations of what they want from a bra. So to make things easier, here is an overview of a few different styles of bras including features and how to get the most from them.

Adhesive Bra: These are made of silicone or foam and are a staple for any wardrobe – you never know when you might need one! The silicon creates a grip to your skin, providing support whilst still being strapless and backless. Low plunge adhesive bras are also available which are fantastic for low-cut necklines and backless dresses. Adhesive bras can support from an A -Cup to a D-Cup.

Balconette Bra: The balconette bra lifts the breast to enhance their shape, appearance and cleavage. Balconette bras are versatile and can be worn with just about any outfit for any occasion but they are extremely helpful if you require a bra for a very low-cut neckline.

The name balconette comes from men in the balcony of a theater looking down upon women — a balconette bra could not be seen from above!

Contour Bra: Contour cups hold their shape, even when not worn. These cups have an underwire and are lined with a thin layer of foam that is molded into a specific shape. Contour cups are a perfect choice for any woman seeking a sculpted silhouette, as they offer a specific round and symmetrical breast shape. Contour cups are a good choice for in-between bra sizes, or a woman with uneven breasts.

Mastectomy Bra: Mastectomy bras are full cup bras that have a pocket inside the cups to insert breast forms. They are for women who have had one or both breasts removed. Some are also specially designed to be worn during the recovery process after surgery. At Vivid Black, we stock and fit a range of Amoena products including bras and breast forms.

Maternity Bras: During pregnancy your rib cage will expand as well as your cup size increasing so it is important to find a maternity bra that is comfortable and supportive as breasts can become quite tender during this time. The key things to look for in a maternity bra are: room to grow, breathable fabric, easy to un clip for breast feeding and most importantly COMFORT!

Minimiser Bra: Minimiser bras are designed for women with average to large breasts who want them to appear smaller. Depending on your size a minimiser bra could reduce your bust measurement by an inch or two. The cups offer full coverage and are made of elasticated fabric which helps to compress the breasts which allows women to wear front-button shirts and blouses without gaping.

Push-up Bra: Push-up cups enhance a woman’s bust line by creating cleavage and the look of fuller breasts. The cups are angled inward so that the breast tissue falls towards the center which creates cleavage. Push-up bras are great if your breasts are smaller and you want to draw attention to them and make them look bigger.

Soft Cup Bra: Soft cup bras are bras that are designed to provide support without using an underwire. Soft cup bra designs may feature things like multi-part cups and wide comfort straps to provide structure and support.  Soft cup bras are designed to be comfortable, so you should wear them anytime comfort is important such as at work, or running errands.

Sports Bra: Sports bras are designed to provide support to female breasts during physical exercise. Sturdier than typical bras, they minimise breast movement, alleviate discomfort, and reduce potential damage to chest ligaments. Many women wear sports bras to reduce pain, and physical discomfort caused by breast movement during exercise.

Strapless Bra: A strapless bra is every woman’s best-kept secret and it is so important to get the sizing right on this one as the support is all in the band. If it’s too tight it will be uncomfortable but if it’s too loose it will keep slipping. Strapless bras are lined with silicon which creates a grip and prevents the bra from falling down. A good quality strapless bra is a fantastic investment and will always come in handy with a strapless top or low cut neckline.

T-shirt bra: A T-shirt bra has seamless contour cups that are designed to give a smooth look under tight or lightweight fabric. The cups are lightly padded to stop the shape of your nipples showing through, these ones are designed for comfort and versatility.

Style Tip: For an invisible look under a white top, wear nude not white!
